Unlike many major cities which have lost buildings and items of cultural significance over the centuries due to wars, Prague has remained remarkably untouched by such destruction. As such, a break in Prague is like travelling back in time a thousand years - not in terms of modern culture and facilities, but in terms of architecture and artefacts.

Prague Museums

Founded in the early 19th Century, the National Museum in Prague is devoted to heroes of the Czech Republic, dinosaur skeletons (perfect for those with young families) and mineralogy. .With almost 14 million items, there's enough here to take up several weekend breaks!

The Jewish Museum in the Jewish Quarter of Prague is filled with an impressive collection of Jewish artefacts and complements the nearby synagogues, making the Jewish Quarter an interesting day's tour.

You can see Prague Castle wherever you are in the city, as St Vitus Cathedral spire thrusts into the sky overlooking the whole city. Founded in 850AD, Prague Castle contains a marvellous art gallery, tombs of martyred saints and the beautiful Royal Gardens.

Prague Galleries

For those with an interest in art, Prague Castle is well worth a visit, featuring the work of many 15th to 18th Century artists including Czech Baroque painting. The National Gallery has works by renowned artists such as Picasso, van Gogh and Gaugin, the Czech government's own art collection. Or for modern sculptures and paintings, visit the Convent Saint Agnes of Bohemia. The House of the Black Madonna not only exhibits Cubist art, but is itself a gorgeous Cubist building. In Prague, the buildings themselves are often as beautiful as the works of art inside.
